It was a great week, friends. Being in control of my food choices and portions is very empowering and that is how it went down for the vast majority of the week. I splurged a few times during the week on a glass of wine with our pasta dinner on Tuesday and a beer with my pizza on Wednesday and a some candy during the day at school, but I tracked it all and it the splurges were all accounted for and within my daily calorie allowances.
So it's week 12 of my 18 week marathon training program. Can you believe it?? I can't. In SIX weeks I will be choose to run for 26.2 miles...Oh..My...Gosh...
So now that it's getting warmer, I am super duper excited about getting to run on the trails again! The Prairie Trail is just a mile from my house, so I pick that up a lot. I also love to run in Moraine Hills and around the McHenry Dam. I remember the first time I ran the Dam Trail...ha ha, get it?!? Anyways, it's a 2 mile loop with a couple of medium-large hills. I was SO proud of myself! There are a half dozen or more trails in that system that are all weaved together. I can't wait to get out there and run a few of them for my long run sometime. It might be awhile though, some of the areas of the trail don't get much sunshine and there could still be a good amount of snow and even ice on the trail. But at least I have the Prairie Trail!

One of the super fun things I got to do this week was head over to the Running Depot on Wednesday night for their weeknight fun run. There wasn't a huge crowd that night, but my incredible partner in crime for the marathon and on Getting There, Melissa joined me!
Like I said, there wasn't a huge crowd that night, so it was just Melissa and I and a really nice guy named Bob. I'm a band teacher and one of the reasons I love music is that it is a deeply personal as well as a social activity. One can take private lessons and practice alone and still become quite accomplished and still be considered a musician. A lot of people are closet musicians. They practice at home and play by themselves and don't ever play in groups or with anyone else because they are shy or they don't have the confidence, etc. But the act of making music with others is an experience that can not be underestimated. You can play by yourself all of your life and become the best instrumentalist or vocalist, etc ever, but if you never make music with others and communicate with another person or a group of people on that level, you will never fully understand all that music has to offer.
Running is just like this! Many people start running and they just keep to themselves. They say things to themselves like, "I'm too slow to run with anyone else" or "I don't want anyone else to see me when I run." But the running community is one of the nicest, most helpful and supportive groups of people there are! I'm so glad that I have met and become friends with the people I meet at races, at The Running Depot and online in groups like Runner Girl, Run Like a Mother and Run Bum Run. I know the Hillstriders are the ones that put on the March Madness Half that I just ran and there's another group called the RoadRunners around Mchenry County. Anyone know of other groups in the area? I would really like to hear what others have to say about this! I would love to join a club and become more immersed in the community. Because, like music, running by yourself is great, but running with others takes it to a whole new level. Until I find one, I'll have fun when I can make the fun runs at The Running Depot on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm and Saturday mornings at 7:30am.
Off to run my 12 miles for this weekend. Thanks so much for reading and have a great week, friends!
