I pretty much despise exercise for the sake of exercise (I find going to the gym particularly boring) and I cannot run on the treadmill (seriously, I should tape it for you sometime, I kinda feel like a baby giraffe). I do enjoy running outside but I still get bored and have to talk myself into getting out there (the best thing about running outside is when I get bored half-way through I HAVE to keep going to get back home)... I can't imagine running a "normal" race, but anything that involves dressing up, fun festivals, obstacle courses yeah, I can do that (even if it does involve running).
My love of novelty 5ks started in December of 2010 when I "ran" (read- ran, jogged, but mostly walked) my first 5K, the Santa Run in downtown Arlington Heights IL (a race where every participant is given a santa suit).

Last May I "ran" (read- ran most of the time but walked some of it to stay on pace with my sister to make sure she wouldn't just sit down on the curb) the Color Run in Racine WI (check it out HERE) these 5K races are held all over the country and are seriously fun, every so often there are color stations where volunteers throw powdered dye at the racers so you end up looking like a rainbow by the end (my profile picture here is actually from that race).
This year I'm running (yes the goal is to actually run this time) the Warrior Dash. It's an obstacle course 5K where you jump over fire, get a viking helmet, beer, and turkey leg?! Yeah, this fits within my criteria for fun races.
I'm running with my kid siblings at 1:30 on June 16th and I'll start seriously training about 6-7 weeks prior (which puts me at the end of April/beginning of May, which is a good time to start because then I can run outside). At the moment I'm unsure which obstacles we will be running, but they should be updating the course map soon (can't wait!) and then I'll be able to start preparing myself mentally.
I don't expect the race to be easy, in fact I kinda expect to want to quit a couple times, but I do expect to have a ton of fun, and while I don't think I'll be able to keep pace with my brother, I am hoping my sister and I don't finish too far behind him.
The months leading up to warrior dash are sure to be filled with excitement. Stay tuned!
