Ah, feels good to be heading in the right direction for two weeks in a row. I lost .9 pounds this week, for a total of 11.7 pounds lost since I started Getting There, and 88.5 pounds overall.

You will never hear me use the word "only" in the same sentence as "lost", as in "I only lost .9 pounds this week". At this point, any loss at all makes it a good week. Someday, when I'm where I want to be with my weight (10 pounds from now? maybe 20? We'll see!), I'll be working hard to make good choices for no scale reward at all. My satisfaction with this week comes not from my weigh in result, but from the fact that I was under control for the duration. Only one Egg White Delight, tiny desserts, no random snacking, and four workouts. A couple of weeks ago, when I was slacking, I was thinking to myself "You know, I'm not doing horribly- this just isn't the behavior of somebody who wants to lose weight." But the last two weeks have been a different story, and that feels good.
I have to brag for a minute about my awesome sister-in-law, Amanda, who had a birthday this week, but achieved an even more important milestone. She and I began losing weight in 2012, within a couple of months of each other.

I'm pretty sure we also began jogging pretty close to the same time. However, while I became a total wuss about jogging once the cold weather hit, and then never really got back into any kind of groove when it warmed back up, Amanda really became a runner. When I did a kind of disappointing 5K back in October (disappointing because it was in a corn maze and there had been horrible rain so the mud was epic in its squelchiness and I ended up having to walk most of it), Amanda was bummed on my behalf. So she invited me over to go running together an hour before my family was supposed to meet for dinner on Sunday, as we try to do once a month. I got there and asked how much she wanted to run, and she said "Let's do a 5K!" I could tell she wanted to redeem the experience of the corn maze and give me that feeling of accomplishment. And sure enough, as we were rounding the final corner, the whole family was waiting in the driveway cheering for us. My Mom had even gotten us medals and said that we were both winners. Yes, I really have the kind of family that does this sort of thing.
While Amanda is a very vocal cheerleader for everybody else, she is incredibly modest about her own progress. But everybody who loves her is extremely proud of the fact that she ran her first half marathon last weekend!
Amanda, I want to be like you when I grow up. The way you have taken control of your health over the last year and a half has been a joy and major source of inspiration. I'm so proud of you, and so blessed to call you family. Happy birthday!
